Who We Are

Here at Music Sprit Society, our mission is to support and uplift youth musicians throughout ​Alberta. Founded in June 2022 with two branches located in ​Edmonton and ​Calgary, we are committed to providing opportunities for these talented individuals to showcase their musical skills and gain valuable performance experience in front of a live audience. Moreover, we understand the importance of nurturing their abilities, which is why we also organize workshops and curate instructional videos on our ​YouTube channel. We are a non-profit and all our services are free of charge and available to anyone who can access them.

An official organization ran by students, the executive team of Music Spirit Society includes:

  • Evan Yin

    Evan Yin is a first-year student at the University of Alberta studying physiology and the President of Music Spirit Society. He is a well-accomplished pianist and piano teacher, performing at several concerts and competing at the local, provincial, and national level.

    First becoming a Canadian Music Competition (CMC) national scholarship winner in 2013, Evan also placed second in CMC in 2022. In 2019 and 2021, he was awarded first place in the Alberta Provincial Music Festival’s Solo Piano - 16 and Under Class and Solo Piano - Senior Class, respectively. In 2019, Evan also completed his Royal Conservatory of Music ARCT diploma in Piano Performance with First Class Honours with Distinction and the highest mark in the Edmonton region. His most recent achievement is earning first place in the Alberta Provincial Music Festival’s composition class in 2022.

    For the past few years Evan has been doing community service by performing solo concerts at Canterbury Manor and accompanying the Conservatory Orchestra. He also enjoys playing trombone as well as composing and producing music for the OSA Music Club.

  • Bill Lu

    Bill Lu is a Grade 12 student at Old Scona Academic School taking the International Baccalaureate program and is currently serving as the Vice President and Tech Officer of Music Spirit Society. Music and teaching are some of his favourite hobbies, and he has been playing piano for more than a decade and teaching for more than three years.

    Bill completed his Royal Conservatory of Music ARCT diploma in Piano Performance with First Class Honours at age 15 and some of his notable piano achievements include being awarded ‘Superior’ in the 2021 Alberta Provincials, ‘Gold’ at the St Albert Rotary Music Festival. He has also won many first places and scholarships at the Edmonton Music & Speech Arts Festival.

    In addition to his role at Music Spirit Society, Bill also performs at local recitals and volunteers at the Heart of the City Music Program, providing free instruction to children between the ages 4-13.

    Outside of music, Bill enjoys playing sports, being on both the Old Scona Senior Men’s Volleyball team and swim team.

  • Anna Yin

    Anna is a Grade 11 student at Archbishop MacDonald High School and the sister of Evan Yin. She has been learning violin since age six and serves as the Secretary of Music Spirit Society.

    Among the many scholarships, awards and festivals Anna has won, some of her most notable include receiving the National Gold medal for her level 10 RCM exam in 2022 and winning the first prize of the 2022 Northern Alberta Concerto Competition in the senior category.

    For the past few years, Anna has been teaching violin and volunteering at Canterbury Court Senior Residence with her brother by holding concerts together.

    Anna also finds enjoyment in sculpting and playing French horn in her free time.

  • Joshua Terry

    Joshua is a Grade 12 student at Old Scona Academic and is currently serving as the Events Photographer of Music Spirit Society. He has a passion for technology, photography, and video production and is involved in Yearbook Club and CyberPatriots at school.

    On the weekends, Joshua works as the Multimedia Production Assistant at his church and spends his time training volunteers on audio and video equipment while producing videos and operating the sound board on a regular basis.

  • Kiana Zhu

    Kiana Zhu, 16, is the Communications Officer of Music Sprit Society and attends Lillian Osborne High School.

    Ever since she was 5, Kiana has won awards and scholarships from numerous competitions and festivals at the local to international levels. Some of her accomplishments include achieving first place at the 2022 Alberta Provincial Music Festival in both Solo Piano 16 and Under and Concerto 1 Movement, first place at the Conero International Piano Competition juvenile division, and the 2019 RCM Regional Gold Medal for Piano Level 10. Kiana was also a CMC national finalist in 2013 and 2022, and she received the Munn Wallin Awards scholarship in 2021 and the Ranald and Vera Shean Memorial Scholarships in 2022.

    In addition to all her awards Kiana was awarded the AMEF Student Recognition Award in Performance in 202, granting her the opportunity to represent the Alberta Music Education Foundation at the Showcase Concert for Music Conference Alberta.

    Kiana enjoys dancing in her spare time when she's not at the piano.
